July 10: 21 Years After Murder Of Five OAU Students, Survivors, Families Await Justice
Today makes it 21 years after the bloody cult attack in which five students were murdered at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife.
It was Saturday, July 10, 1999, and the students killed included a 21-year-old 400-Level law student and the then Secretary-General of the Students Union, George Iwilade, popularly referred to as Afrika.
Others killed were Eviano Ekeimu, 400-Level Medicine; Yemi Ajiteru, an extra year student; Babatunde Oke, 100-Level Philosophy, and Godfrey Ekpede.
According to a survivor of the attack, Lanre Adeleke (Legacy), who was the then students’ union president, the then vice-chancellor, Wale Omole, was the sponsor of the deadly attack.
He told PREMIUM TIMES that his colleagues were killed in Blocks 5 and 8 of Awolowo Hall of the university, allegedly by members of Black Axe Confraternity.
While Mr Omole was accused of involvement in the attack, he has repeatedly denied the allegations and also said he was not found wanting by a panel of enquiry set up by the federal government through the Ministry of Education, then headed by Tunde Adeniran, a professor.
Mr Adeleke told PREMIUM TIMES the attack was carried out in 1999 with the intention to kill union leaders fighting against irregularities after Mr Iwilade had led students to a parade of nine members of the Black Axe Confraternity four months earlier.
He told our correspondent that he escaped being killed by jumping from the third floor of Block 8 of the Awolowo Hall where his room was.
While arrests were made thereafter, he is saddened that Nigeria’s corrupt judicial system allowed suspects to escape justice.
In an earlier report by PREMIUM TIMES, Mr Adeleke said: “We started the arrest from the day it happened. We went after some of them that we had their names. We were able to pick about 33 of them out of about 48, they were arraigned and we pursued the case in courts for good three and half years. For three and half years, I was practically doing nothing. We go to court almost every day to make sure justice prevailed.”
The matter was first handled by Justice Okoi Itam-led Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which rebuked Mr Omole’s administration before the matter was left for the court to decide.
“We were always in court because we wanted justice. Unfortunately, there were internal issues in Osun State then, which was part of the reasons why justice was not done. That was the real set back we had after three and a half years due to the complications of the judicial system itself,” Mr Adeleke told PREMIUM TIMES.
“Despite the fact (that) the judicial enquiry under the administration of Olusegun Obasanjo asked that the VC be tried, no government has made effort. No government has the morals.
“Even the bursar at that panel of enquiry confirmed to us what one of the cultists said; that they were given over N300,000 two days before the incident to buy ammunition for security reasons. It was established. The money was given to them on July 8 through one Kazeem Bello who was not even a student of Ife but a student of UNILAG. They arrested Kazeem then, and he made (a) confession.
“Despite evidence of identification by a witness who claimed to have seen Mr Idahosa, one of the suspects, with arms on the morning of the murder, and the confession of Kazeem Bello, the court held that he had no case to answer.”

Maintaining his demand for justice, Mr Adeleke, who is invited every year to give his account of the incident, insists that: “A criminal case is not something that ends like that. It has a long life. Even if we forget about those that were illegally discharged, what about others? I knew many of them ran away immediately after the attack but that’s not the issue.
“The issue of justice is not about arresting everybody. Even if it is few or even one or even Professor Wale Omole, people will have this sense of relief. The victory lies in how much we are able to make sure cultism do(es) not rise by bringing these people to book.”
In our earlier publication two years ago, Mr Omole did not return calls or reply to text messages sent. Meanwhile, in a telephone interview on Friday, he said: “the matter is gone and I don’t want to talk about it. Even my children have told me not to address the press on this again. People bring this allegation I know nothing about every year”, he concluded as he refused further comment.
Tayo Iwilade, a graduate of OAU, also speaks about the murder of his brother and others.
Mr Iwilade, currently a lawyer and rights activist, said the family monitored the criminal trial of three of the suspects, which ended in “circumstances we consider strange to date.”
For him, he wondered whether the investigative arm of the criminal justice system has delivered well on its duty towards the search for justice.
Meanwhile, 21 years after the attack, the constant clampdown on unionism has raised concerns over the security situation on campus. Students on several occasions have accused their colleagues’ exhibit tendencies similar to those of cultists.
This newspaper also reported how the institution suspended six students for involvement in cultism last year.
For the authority, the school’s chief security officer, Babatunde Oyatokun, said the university would keep working to maintain its reputation for a peaceful campus and zero tolerance for cultism.
The university spokesperson, Abiodun Olanrewaju, did not respond to enquiries as to when the student Union ban would be lifted.
Current students of the university will be holding a virtual conference today to discuss the past, present and future of students’ unionism amidst cult attacks across Nigeria.
THE TRAUMA OF RAPE
According to my own lame man definition,Rape is the abduction of a woman for sexual purpose which involve forceful penetration into any of the body part such as vagina, anal, oral. It can also be other sexual act that doesn't involve penetration.
The psychological effect of rape on the victim are suicidal impulses, several nightmares, fear of sex, coldness towards life, mourning, low self esteem etc.also the rapist go through some psychological effect such as regret, remorse etc.
If one falls victim of Rape ,the person should seek medical attention, visit a counsellor, report the case to the police immediately and make sure the evidence is been preserved.
However,Rape can be prevented by not allowing oneself to be isolated with a man. Also be careful of whom you allow into your house. Trust your instincts, when you feel uncomfortable around someone take your leave.Act quickly when you are around a rapist either by lying to the rapist that you have sexually transmitted diseases or you can react negatively and forcefully. .

About seven cows belonging to a Fulani herder, Alhaji Abdullahi, in Elepo Village, Ifon, Osun State were in the early hours of Tuesday struck dead by thunderstorm.
The incident which reportedly occurred during an early morning rain, threw the village into panic.
The cows were said to have been tethered in a place in the village, when a loud deafening noise was heard around where the animals were kept.
Seven of them were found dead after the incident, though there were more cows on tether at the spot that were not affected.

DIAMOND STANDARD—WHY BUY A RING WHEN YOU CAN BUY TOKENS?
Q&A with Douglas Borthwick
Feel pressure to propose this Holiday? Instead, stuff your loved one’s stocking with diamond coins that have the potential to grow as much as your love!
Word on Wall Street is that INX Limited will unveil the world’s first diamond commodity with the Diamond Standard Coin. Eyes will sparkle with the Coin, which is both a digital and physical asset: a standardized set of diamonds with a wireless chip.
The availability of the Coin on the INX platform is pending regulatory approval for the $25 million initial public commodity offering. A letter of intent has already been signed—which means everyone’s cryptocurrency wallet may be shining brighter this Holiday season.
We recently caught up with Douglas Borthwick, Chief Marketing Officer and Business Development Officer of INX Limited, and asked him questions to offer insight into cryptocurrencies and the bright future of finance that lies ahead in 2021.
Why invest in cryptocurrencies?
Cryptocurrencies are limited in number. The local currency you currently use in your daily life is infinite. Indeed whenever your government wants to keep the economy running, or pay for a new social program, it simply prints more currency. This has been exacerbated by COVID, where government safety nets are not being paid for by higher taxes, but rather by higher money printing.
Investors in cryptocurrencies see them as life rafts for wealth. If you have your savings in your bank, the purchasing power is decreasing by the day, and you make little to no yield. Indeed in some countries a negative yield. Meanwhile if you move your wealth into cryptocurrencies, you see your wealth remain afloat. You can earn a solid yield, and the purchasing power is increasing. Best of all, there is no government interference and there is limited supply.
What is a smart investment for people who are unfamiliar with investing more than just mutual funds and 401Ks?
Many investors are dipping their toes into crypto through investment vehicles like GBTC. This is a Trust company that purchases Bitcoin, and then via an investment vehicle offers exposure to its price moves to investors.
How can people dip their toes into investing in cryptocurrencies without risking too much?
The best way to not 'risk too much' is to only invest that which you are happy to lose. If the position size makes you uncomfortable, then reduce the position size.
If a person invests in a cryptocurrency, how can they "cash out" on the investment when ready?
That is simple. Once you have purchased cyrptocurrency, you will be holding it in an electronic wallet, perhaps on an exchange. You would go to that exchange and sell out of that cryptocurrency, reversing the original transaction. It's like when you go to the bank and buy EUROS for your vacation. After the vacation you come back to the bank and sell them back the EUROS.
Can cryptocurrency be used to purchase products?
In the US, you can buy a SEC registered security (INX Limited is the first), and a myriad of shops, hotels and products now accept them as payment. Indeed, even PayPal now offers their customers the ability to buy and sell crypto through their app.
Where is cryptocurrency heading in 2021?
Cryptocurrency adoption is just getting started. There is a limited supply, with an exponential growing demand from institutions, retail and corporations. The more people learn about them, and the more they look to allocate their investment, then the higher in price the cryptocurrencies will go.

Rapists To Get Life Imprisonment In Osun State
The Osun State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill recommending life imprisonment for rapists in the state.
Speaker of the Assembly, Timothy Owoeye, who made the disclosure, also said a 14-year jail term now awaited anyone, who attempted rape in the state.
He said the passage of the bill into law was to assist in curtailing the spate of rape that had become rampant in the state.
According to him, the bill having passed through evaluation at a public hearing was later considered by the House Committee before passing the third reading for approval.
He observed that the bill would charge the law enforcement agents to prosecute rape cases logically and implore the youth to desist from the ugly practice.
COVID-19: A Biblical Analysis of this Pestilence and the Way Forward.
A pestilence is any very serious infectious disease that spreads quickly and kills large numbers of people. It is any epidemic disease that is highly contagious, infectious, virulent and devastating.
This description undoubtedly and accurately fits the disease terrorizing the world in a time like this.
A disease that has altered greatly, several plans and intents of mankind. Many schools have been closed down, many businesses shut down, many events postponed or cancelled, many organizations disorganized, several economies have been greatly confused, many cities have been isolated, desirable properties have been left unattended. All resulting from the terror of a microscopic but catastrophic, tiny but deadly virus called coronavirus.
Renown scientists and award-winning inventors of the world have been left appalled by this malignant virus.
Nations with the best military set-up have not been able to combat this terrorist called COVID-19.
Very affluent and wealthy nations of the world have been left handicapped by this virus. Obviously, money have not been able to overpower this powerful enemy of nations neither has physical strength granted men victory over this pestilence.
Kings and rulers of the world have passionately pursued a wayout of this menace but to no avail.
Indeed, this is a perilous time. Who shall save the world?
The word pestilence is most frequently used in the prophetic books in the bible, and it occurs 43 times in the New King James Version of the Bible and it is always accompanied by the words sword, noisome or evil beasts, or war or famine.
Biblically, a pestilence or plague is usually as a result of God's divine judgement or visitation against sin of a country or nation. (Ezek.14.13-19)
A pestilence at a time like this could be a validation or fulfillment of the words of the prophecy of Jesus Christ and other biblical patriarchs as touching the signs and symptoms of the end time. So this disease is a proof that Jesus Christ truely exists and that the world would soon be wiped out (Rev. 6).
Matt.24.7 - For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.
Luke.21.11 - And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.
Origin of the Pestilence (Coronavirus) traceable to the Holy Bible
It is visible to the blind and audible to the deaf that things which were considered, decades ago to be morally degrading, culturally debasing and spiritually demeaning have become globally celebrated in this present time.
We now have a world where a transgender is more celebrated than a general overseer.
We now have a generation that even in the face of global financial crises, expends heavy amounts of money to promote immorality and ungodliness.
Stories about paedophilia ( a state of primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prebubescent children by an adult), Incest (sexual relations between people classed as being too closely related to marry each other), Bestiality (sexual intercourse between a person and an animal) are becoming more frequent in our news headlines. We now have headlines such as;
Three men jailed for sex with cow, goat, nine horses and dogs
72-year-old ‘sexual predator’ accused of abusing underage boys
Seven bodies found in house after man shoots family in 'unimaginable tragedy'
Our news broadcast is now termed incomplete if it is void of stories related to violence, bloodshed, insurgency and terrorism.
A world where most success driven minds are now compelled to be immodestly and sexually appealing with their products and contents for them to be really "successful." (If your post on media is devoid of sexual contents, you are likely to have lesser patronage or followers).
Men of this generation have obviously embraced darkness and rejected light for their deeds are evil. We have often chosen Barabbas (a notorious murderer and robber) over Jesus Christ (the holy lamb of God that never sinned) (John 18:40, Mark 15:7).
Obviously, our persistent sin and rebellion against God is the root cause of this pestilence called Coronavirus.
This conclusion is justified by the following instances; On two occasions in the Bible, God destroyed 14,700 and 24,000 people respectively with a plague for various acts of disobedience and rebellion (Numbers 16:42-49 and 25:1-9)
Ezek.14.13 (NIV) - "Son of man, if a country sins against me by being unfaithful and I stretch out my hand against it to cut off its food supply and send famine upon it and kill its men and their animals,
Ezek.14.19(NKJV)- "Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out My fury on it in blood, and cut off from it man and beast,
Ezek.14.20 - as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, even if Noah, Daniel and Job were in it, they could save neither son nor daughter. They would save only themselves by their righteousness.
Jer.34.17(NIV) - "Therefore, this is what the LORD says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom for your fellow countrymen. So I now proclaim 'freedom' for you, declares the LORD -'freedom' to fall by the sword, plague and famine. I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.
What should we do? (The Way Forward)
The safest places on earth are not necessarily places with the best military set-up or best asylum they are merely places devoid of threats to safety. Those places are safe not because they are proficient and anticipatory in handling threats to security and safety. They are rather safe because they are relatively lacking in constituent factors of security vulnerabilities. Therefore, it is better to get rid of or exterminate Coronavirus by dealing with it's root causes than just adopting measures to mitigate, control or manage this lethal menace. Deal with sin and satan (stealer, destroyer and killer) will be gone for good.
Therefore, all and sundry should carefully consider the following;
1. Global repentance from sin and reverent acknowledgement of the sovereignty of the almighty God (Jonah 3:1-9, Romans 1:28-32)
Jonah.3.5 - So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
Jonah.3.10 - Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.
2. A collective effort of humble prayers unto the Almighty God (IIChronicles 7:13-14)
2Chr.7.14 - if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
3. Absolute trust in God for protection against Coronavirus even while we try to be precautionary (Psalms 127:1, 91:1-4, Jeremiah 17:5) ~ Ps.127.1 - Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.*
4. Faith in and plea for the blood of the Lamb of God (Jesus Christ) that takes away the sin of the whole world (Exodus 12:13, Revelation 7:14, 12:11) ~ Exod.12.13 - Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
5. Individual acceptance of the Lordship and Saviourship of Jesus Christ because He is the ressurection and the life, He is also the door of His sheep. (John 11:25, Luke 10:19) ~ John.11.25 - Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.
John.11.26 - And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"
John.10.7 - Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
John.10.9 - I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
Conclusion
In times like these you need a saviour,
In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the solid rock
This rock is Jesus, yes He's the one,
This rock is Jesus, the only one,
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the solid rock, (Adv. Hymn No. 593, Stanza 1)
Governor Oyetola: We’ll ensure smooth take-off of Federal College of Education in Osun
Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun says his administration will ensure smooth and effective take-off of the proposed Federal College of Education in the state.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu and those who worked for the consideration of the state as one of the beneficiaries of the institutions.
“This is a rare privilege and we will continue to take it as such, because we are not the only state in the South-West.
