Coronavirus: Trump says China wants him to lose re-election
US President Donald Trump has said China "will do anything they can" to make him lose his re-election bid, stepping up his criticism of Beijing amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In a White House interview with Reuters news agency, he said Beijing faced a "lot" of possible consequence from the US for the outbreak.
He said China should have let the world know about the contagion much sooner.
Mr Trump himself is often accused of not doing enough to tackle the crisis.
The coronavirus has ravaged a formerly humming US economy that had been the president's main selling point for his re-election campaign in November.
Mr Trump, who has waged a trade war with China, offered no specifics about how he might act against Beijing.
Why so many US nurses are out of work
Coronavirus: Tracking the global outbreak
He told Reuters: "There are many things I can do. We're looking for what happened."
Mr Trump added: "China will do anything they can to have me lose this race."
The Republican president said he believes Beijing wants his likely Democratic challenger Joe Biden to win in November's election.
Mr Trump also said he is sceptical of data indicating Mr Biden would win.
"I don't believe the polls," the president said. "I believe the people of this country are smart. And I don't think that they will put a man in who's incompetent."
US media reported earlier in the day that Mr Trump had erupted at political advisers last Friday evening about internal polling that showed him losing in critical states.
His aides have doubts about whether Mr Trump will win crucial battlegrounds such as Florida, Wisconsin and Arizona, while some of his re-election team have all but given up hope of success in Michigan, according to the Associated Press news agency.
"I'm not losing to Joe Biden," Mr Trump reportedly said, inserting an expletive, during a conference call with campaign officials.
The US president also reportedly snapped at his campaign manager, Brad Parscale, who had called in from Florida.
He cursed at Mr Parscale and at one point mentioned suing him, according to CNN and the Washington Post, though it is unclear how serious was his threat of legal action.
Upping the virus
President Trump's criticism of China has been consistent - and increasingly sharp - in recent weeks. He's questioned the accuracy of the death toll there, and even said he was looking into suggestions that the virus originated in a laboratory in Wuhan.
But this is the harshest criticism of its kind so far. By claiming that China's delay in alerting the world to the spread of the virus was politically motivated - and designed to boost the election chances of his political rival Joe Biden at the expense of his own - Mr Trump is upping the ante in an increasingly bellicose war of words.
Earlier this week a senior Chinese official, Le Yucheng, questioned the president's handling of the crisis, and accused him of not acting quickly enough in order to prepare the American people for the spread of Covid-19.
For all that, the president dismisses claims that the 2020 election will amount to a referendum on his handling of this crisis, its outcome may well rest on the pace of the economic recovery in the wake of the pandemic. Expect the war of words between the world's two largest economies to continue.
Earlier on Wednesday, Mr Trump said he would not be renewing his government social distancing guidelines once they expire on Thursday.
The guidelines - which were originally supposed to last 15 days and were then extended an additional 30 - encouraged Americans to work from home and avoid large gatherings, while advising those with underlying health conditions to self-isolate.
After more than a month being stuck mainly at the White House, Mr Trump said he plans to resume travel, starting with a trip to Arizona next week.
He told reporters he hopes to hold mass campaign rallies in the coming months with thousands of supporters.
The US currently accounts for around a third of all coronavirus cases worldwide. Its death toll - at more than 60,000 - has in six weeks surpassed the number of Americans killed in the two decades of the Vietnam War.
Unemployment, which just a few weeks ago was at a near-record low, now stands at more than 26 million.
Newly released figures on Wednesday showed the US economy had shrunk by nearly 5% - its sharpest c ontraction since the Depression
NAWOJ: Houses without decent toilet facilities encourage raping of females
The chairperson of the Plateau Chapter of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalist (NAWOJ), Jennifer Yarima, has observed that women and girls living in houses without toilet facilities are more at risk of being raped.
In an interview with newsmen on Wednesday in Jos, Yarima said that if women and girls had proper toilet facilities, hoodlums would not find anything to capitalise on in their quest to commit the heinous crime.
She lamented that some rapists took advantage of the fact that most homes in some communities did not have toilets, as such found it easy to track down their victims.
Yarima revealed that NAWOJ had spoken with the Commissioner for Environment in Plateau on the need to ensure that houses had toilet facilities, adding that defecating in the open by females, aside from the health implications, provided opportunities for rapists.
The chairperson advised that parents should be mindful of people they entrusted their children to as most rape and abuse cases were usually carried out by such persons.
She also called on parents to educate their children on sex education, saying that if they failed to do so, peers and other people might do so in a wrong manner.
“We must educate our children as a family so that when they go to the society, they will know what act is wrong or right, and would also know how to control themselves outside.” she said.
She said that the culture of silence by most families when a member was raped, needed to be jettisoned as such act encouraged culprits to continue the heinous crime.
Recall that in July 2019, the Acting Managing Director of Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB), Mr Kefas Yilrwang, had lamented that some houses in Bukuru and Jos metropolis were built without toilet facilities.
Yilrwang had told newsmen that occupants of such houses simply located nearby bush or abandoned building structures, to ease themselves.
In an interview with NAN at that time, a female tenant (name withheld) had said she often went to nearby ‘bush’ to defecate, adding, “that is what most tenants in this area do.”
‘’It is not a new thing; we are used to it and we have accepted it because the house rent is very cheap and affordable to us.
“Some day, our income might improve to enable us secure accommodations with toilet facilities, but for now, this is what we can afford, ” she had said.
House of Reps approve orthopaedic hospital, medical centre for Jos and Wase
The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed through the second reading, two bills for the establishment of an Orthopaedic Hospital in Jos and a Federal Medical Centre in Wase, both in Plateau state.
Both bills are being sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, who represents Wase Federal Constituency of Plateau state.
Presenting the bill for the establishment of an Orthopaedic Hospital in Jos, Hon Wase said the Bill sought to amend the Orthopaedic Hospitals Management Board Act Cap.O10 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to provide for the establishment of the Orthopaedic Hospital Jos, Plateau State under the control of the Orthopedic Hospitals Management Board and affiliated to the Jos University Teaching Hospital to provide specialized Orthopaedic treatment and medical services”.
The Deputy speaker stated that Nigeria with a population of over 200 million persons has only three Orthopaedic hospitals as provided for by the Orthopedic Hospitals Management Board Act. “This, Mr Speaker, Hon. Colleagues, you will agree with me, is grossly inadequate”.
Hon Wase pointed out that it was imperative for an additional Orthopaedic Hospital to be established and sited in Jos in order to ease the burden on the three extant Orthopaedic Hospitals and to cater to the needs of the North Central zone, which does not have a single Orthopaedic Centre.
According to him, “it is our belief that, when there is an additional Orthopaedic Hospital in Jos, it will connect neighbouring States such as; Nasarawa, the FCT, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Benue and Taraba states thereby enabling more persons to access specialized orthopaedic treatment and medical services”
Speaking on the bill for the establishment of a medical centre in Wase, the Deputy Speaker lamented that despite the strategic location of Wase in Plateau state with its dense and growing population, it has no Tertiary Health facility to provide quality health services for its people.
According to him, “establishment of the Federal Medical Centre, Wase will go a long way to reduce the burden on the over-stretched Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) and other health facilities within the north-central and north-eastern part of the country, and people of Bauchi, Gombe, Jos south local area and part of Taraba state can easily access services in the facility”.
He noted that his constituents are in dire need of a medical centre to fill the huge gap and address the concern of those whose future will be guaranteed by establishing a federal medical centre.
According to him, “it is imperative to note that Wase as a geographic entity is located to connect the southern and northern Plateau zones and also connects to several neighbouring communities such as in several states including Bauchi, Nasarawa, Gombe and Taraba states
“Wase is also a rich economic zone harbouring rich deposits of mineral resources and of recent, federal government oil exploration activities which has been attracting both local and international investors to the constituency
“It is, therefore, only logical that a place of such strategic economic, cultural and geographic significance should have a health facility that can cater to the needs of its growing population”.
He further argued that “the ongoing fight against COVID-19 is testamentary to the fact that we as a nation, need more health facilities in order to adequately cater for the needs of our ever-growing population”
Hon Wase added that research had shown that tertiary health facilities make up only 0.25% of health facilities in the country noting that “the low number of tertiary health facilities per unit population can lead to a lengthy wait for specialized care”.
Both bills were passed and referred to the House committee on health institutions and health care services for further legislative action.
Plateau Governor’s Chief Of Staff Tests Positive For COVID-19
The Plateau State Government has confirmed that the Chief of Staff to the state governor, Noel Donjur, has tested positive for COVID-19.
The state’s Commissioner for Information confirmed the development in a statement on Friday.
Donjur’s status came days after the state’s Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Abe Aku, tested positive for the virus.
The statement reads, “The Chief of Staff to the Plateau State governor, Noel Donjur, has tested positive to COVID-19 after the test that was conducted for members of the state EXCO on 1st July, 2020 following the directive of Governor Lalong.

“Accordingly, health officials have commenced treatment for him at one of the isolation centres in the state capital Jos, while members of his family and other contacts are being traced and tested.
“The Chief of Staff who is in high spirits urges prayers from members of the public and also encourages people to submit to COVID-19 testing which is very important in unveiling cases and leading to treatment.

SUBJECT: RECOVERY OF EASTERN PALM UNIVERSITY: JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED
- WE THANK ALL THOSE WHO STOOD BY US THROUGHOUT THE LEGAL BATTLE
We are elated by the news of the recovery of the Eastern Palm University built by the previous administration of Rochas Okorocha and later converted to private use by the same government. We are glad that justice has been served at last.
Recall that till now, the Comrade Sylvester Anyikwa-led Orluzurumee Youth Assembly, the apex social cultural youth organization in Orlu zone, had gone to court to challenge the Imo state house of assembly law number 3,which ceded the Eastern Palm University to former governor Rohas Okorocha.
On this note therefore, we call on the governor to speedily send in an executive bill to the state assembly requesting a repeal of law Number 3, which handed over the Eastern Palm University to Senator Rochas Okorocha, hence oral pronouncements is not enough.
Between last year and January 2021, Orluzurumee youth assembly made over 12 appearances to secure a landmark judgment in favor of Ndimo, because it's a well known fact that the support we enjoy is because the case we instituted was a public-interest matter.
On this note, therefore, the apex youth body in Orlu zone, is sincerely thankful to the State Governor His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma for the complete takeover of the Eastern Palm University. We also appreciate the overwhelming support of all those who stood by us in our legal battle to recover what belongs to the people.
We also encourage the Governor to keep up with the good works so that posterity will be kind to him.
Long live Orluzurumee youth assembly!
Long live Imo State!
Orluzurumee! Igwe bu Ike!

BEFORE YOU THREATEN BISHOP MATTHEW KUKAH
"the Christmas message of bishop Kukah is a compedously articulated voices of all sane Nigerians crying against a government that has butchered governance and desecrate the little achievement of a striving Nation."
Most Northern elites and their tentacles, it seems to me, are addicted to using threats in reacting or responding to opinions on National issues that are contrary to theirs. Perhaps they failed to comprehend the simple truth that: Nigeria, is one nation that belongs to many people of diverse culture, tradition and beliefs, thus besides the variation of human beings, the diversity that characterized our local societies along is capable of planting opinions that'll appear more diverse than the individuality of the citizens and this, no doubt, will reflect in noway other than one person's opinion being different From that of the other.
I earnestly believe that, such difference, no matter the scourge it rage on our emotions, most not only be accepted as being a highly effective catalyst of development, but must be welcomed as a necessary ingredient of both development, growth and peace in any society that truly aspire for betterment.
By acceptance, I do not mean that we must agree with opinions that disagree with ours neither do I suggest that we shouldn't express our disagreement and reservations . Rather I think it is unwise for anyone to react to someone's opinion in a way and manner that threatens the physical dignity and fundamental human Rights of the person. Thus, I'd mean that one should seize such precious opportunity to depose the ignorance that inspired such contrary (perceived wrong) opinion, using argument that stems from superior knowledge, and wisdom.
What is new In the Christmas message of bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, that The Nigerian citizens have not said? There's nothing that the bishop wrote in his message that have not been said by others. And so, the Christmas message of bishop Kukah is a compedously articulated voices of all sane Nigerians crying against a government that has butchered governance and desecrate the little achievement of a striving Nation.
The bishop wrote his Christmas message in an effort to remedy the catastrophically stormy calamity that is thundering the ground- earthquaking the foundations of this our dear nation. If you disagree with him, invest your boiling thoughts in averting the dangers and threats against our freedom, independence, nation and unity that governless government (s) have, over the years, plunge us into. The only question on my mind if I'm avail the opportunity to directly asked those who thought it wise to reproach the esteemed bishop with hard threats is whether such will right the wrongs, light the dark night, and destroy the destruction that is destroying our country today.
Since the day president Muhammadu Buhari came to power, we've been faced with one major challenge that threatens our unity. It is not a new challenge. It always stick it's neck out of thesame circumstances that led to the Nigerian-biafra war. The waves of religious intolerance, and the seeming self coronation of some Northerners as the senior citizens and prefects, with special rights and privileges, elevated and placed above other citizens who merely exist with little or no rights of theirs. This have continue to be the major factor responsible for the expansion of the crack on our fragile unity.
I must warn that no citizen is superior to another. Nigeria is a nation of citizens with equal rights and no one have been conferred with such special authority to deny others citizens the right to live in any part of the nation.
Thus, those who are chanting that Kukah must live sokoto and the ones who threatens his life must be schooled on the consequences of the lyrics of their carelessly composed song. They must be warned that the deployment of such venomous senseless aggression is in itself a call to war and no war have ever served men of sane mind with any good.
